Heritage matters
The cottages are listed on the State Heritage Register (since November 1981) and the Local Heritage Register.
Some benefits of the heritage listings are:
Entitlement of the owners and the co-operative to certain benefits and funding assistance, for approved conservation and maintenance projects.
Maintaining the front façade so that the distinguishing original qualities and character of the cottages are retained.
State Heritage Register
State heritage places, areas and objects are established through the Heritage Places Act which is administered by the South Australian Heritage Council.
Heritage properties can be altered or developed, but it is necessary to obtain planning approval before doing so. Any alterations should be sympathetic to the character of the original place and ensure the heritage features of the property are protected.
Heritage South Australia is part of the Department for Environment and Water. It provides administrative and policy support to the South Australian Heritage Council.
Local Heritage Register
Local heritage places and objects are established through the Development Act.
The Local Heritage Register is administered by the Adelaide City Council.
